nem marks milestone supporting Pacific connectivity initiative

The East Micronesia Cable System (EMCS), involving approximately 2,300 kilometre of subsea cable with associated equipment, cable landing stations and civil works connects the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati and Nauru—bringing high-speed, reliable communications to communities previously dependent on satellite connectivity.

Since being engaged by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) about four years ago, nem has provided co-ordination services for the project. This has meant working closely with legal, technical and environmental advisers as well as the contractors appointed by the project's Management Committee to deliver the infrastructure.

AIFFP has also identified project outcomes relating to social and economic benefits which are being monitored. The official diplomatic missions in each country have been actively involved in the project at all times.

For nem, the milestone reflects ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange across regions navigating complex infrastructure, resilience and energy transition challenges.

It represents a steady and deliberate contribution to strengthening regional partnerships and supporting broader system reliability and development outcomes.

Recognising the value of our involvement, nem’s contract has been extended to the end of 2026 to help embed the project’s benefits now that the infrastructure is in place.
